Barroso: difficoltà sui conti pubblici in Italia

ITALY MUST WORK ON DEBT SAYS BARROSO

(ANSA) - Rimini, August 27 - Italy is better placed than many countries to beat the global recession but must work harder on cutting its budget deficit and public debt, European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said Friday.
"In certain respects Italy is better placed than other countries; it has a solid banking system, no private debt problems, a strong level of competition in various sectors and a stable level of unemployment," Barroso said.
But he warned that Italy also has "big difficulties with its public debt and its budget deficit".
"I think there is a lot of work to do here to recover confidence".
At almost 116% of GDP, Italy's public debt is the highest in the 27-nation European Union, just above Greece with 113%.
Last month Italy passed a 25-billion-euro austerity package aimed at bringing its budget deficit within eurozone fiscal parameters.
The two-year package sets out to trim Italy's budget deficit, which was 5.3% of GDP in 2009, back to 5% in 2010, 3.9% in 2011 and 2.7% in 2012.

The economic and financial crisis – the worst in 80 years – has rocked Europe and the whole world. It has destroyed millions of jobs and has put millions of people at the risk of poverty and social exclusion.
